How To Make A Chalkboard

This is a super simple tutorial on how to make a chalkboard. Like I’ve said before, I love finding free items and turning them into something great.

This ugly bird print was on the side of the road and with a free sign. My husband thought I was absolutely crazy when I picked it up. Here is the before picture.

I saw the potential. The great thing about it, was that it had a smooth glass and a frame. Then all I did was get a can of Rustoleum Chalk Board spray paint for $3.75 at Home Depot. Since the frame of my picture was already black, I just sprayed the chalk board paint all over the glass in a nice even coat. Make sure you lay it flat so you don’t get any drips. I let it dry for a few hours, then brought it in my house and decided to make it a Christmas chalkboard above my mantle shelf. I use Chalk Pens, they are like liquid chalk. I prefer Chalk Ink brand over the Hobby Lobby Bistro Chalk Marker, but I was working with what I had already. So I used a mix of both pens for different thickness.

Can you even believe that this huge chalkboard statement piece used to be that hideous bird painting. So next time you want to toss that old 1980’s print, save it for a project. This can also be done with an old mirror.

PS This amazing mantle shelf came from Real Deals.
